We evolved this "tree", a 2D structure that tries to reach high and wide in order to gather "light" (ie fitness points) away from the root, as a demonstration of an improved simulation and a faster evolutionary algorithm.
The arms of this structure are too heavy by themselves, but the evolutionary process found a structure that is perfectly balanced at the center.
Click here for the computer printout with the structure of the tree. We use a 1:1 scale printout made on a large plotter to build easily, by laying the bricks directly over the paper image.
Click here for a quicktime movie of the evolution of the
tree.
