RoboCup Junior 2001

RESCUE rules

Theme.

Robots will rescue human victims from a "burning" building.

Playing Field.

The field is made of white foamcore, with dimensions 3 feet (100cm) X 5 feet (164cm). The field is marked with green and black electrical tape. There is a 1 cm border (made with green tape) around the edge of the field (wrapped around the edge of the foamcore). There is a black line, made of black electrical tape, which outlines a maze on the foamcore. It may have 90 degree turns in it, turns of other angles or curves. The line will never cross itself. Towards the end of the black line, there is a small ramp (grey in the diagram below), which goes to a platform. The platform is 12" by 12" square, and approximately 4" off the ground. It has solid sides and a glass or clear plastic cover. Underneath the glass, there is a light source (e.g., a flashlight – torch – the fire inside the building). On top of the glass are three (toy) people – oh no – they are trapped on the roof!!! At the far edge of the platform, off the foamcore, on the ground, is a section of soft foam (like packing sponge – pink in the diagram – this is the firemen’s net).

BUILDING PLANS for the ramp and platform are available HERE!

Note that the exact path of the black line is a variable, though it will be made with standard electrical tape.

Game Play.

The robots have to follow the black line, up to the roof of the "burning building" and push the three stranded people off the platform to the safety of the net below.

Robots will be scored based on time to complete the course and on points (described below). The time will be kept by the referee, using a stopwatch, to hundredths of a second. Robots will be given a maximum of 3 minutes to complete the course.

Bonus points will be awarded for reaching the bottom of the platform, reaching the top of the platform, pushing each person off the platform and getting each person to reach the safety net below.

Rules.

The Robot must fit inside an 22cm diameter tube, no more than 22.5 cm high and must never exceed these limits during play.

The programming of the robot should allow a 5 second time delay from starting the program to when the robot moves.

When instructed, the program is to be started and the robot placed at the start of the black line by the referee.

The human competitors are not allowed within 50 cm of the field during play.

A robot that completely leaves the black line will end the round at the position where it left the black line.

A robot that drives off the field of play automatically forfeits all points for that round.

All rules are administered by the referee and are up to the interpretation of the referee.

All other rules of concerning "Inspection" and "Environment" are the same as for the Soccer challenge.

Scoring.

The main goal is to complete the course as quickly as possible.

As such, score is primarily based on time to complete the course.

If no robots can complete the course, then the distance traveled along the course is measured and the robot that travels the furthest distance along the course wins.

If all robots complete the course, then the robot with the fastest time wins.

If there is a tie, then bonus points will be considered.

5 bonus points are awarded for reaching the bottom of the platform.

5 bonus points are awarded for reaching the top of the platform.

1 bonus point is awarded for pushing each person off the platform into the safety net below.
